Commemoration of National Students’ Day

On 19 May 2026, the Consulate General of Algeria in London commemorated the 70th anniversary of National Students’ Day, marking the historic 19 May 1956 students’ strike, under the slogan: “A Memory of Struggle and a Journey of Nation-Building.” The ceremony was held at the premises of the Consulate General, in the presence of consular staff and officials, as well as members of the Algerian national community residing in the United Kingdom.

The ceremony began with the raising of the national flag and the playing of the national anthem, followed by the recitation of Al-Fatiha and a minute of silence in tribute to the souls of our honoured martyrs.

On this occasion, the Consul General delivered a speech highlighting the significance of the 19 May 1956 students’ strike as a major historic milestone in the course of Algeria’s glorious liberation struggle. He emphasized that the strike embodied the spirit of sacrifice and national commitment demonstrated by Algerian students in their defence of the freedom and independence of their homeland.

He also stressed the importance of preserving national memory and drawing inspiration from the values of knowledge, hard work and patriotism in pursuing Algeria’s development and strengthening its standing.

The Consul General further highlighted the role played by Algerian students and highly qualified professionals residing in the United Kingdom in representing and bringing honour to Algeria across various scientific and academic fields.

The ceremony concluded in a deeply patriotic atmosphere, marked by a strong sense of loyalty and pride in Algeria’s glorious history.
